Introduction to VEX Robotics
Donegal Education Support Centre in collaboration with ATU Donegal are offering a VEX Robotics Workshop for Primary & Post Primary teachers.
Participants at the workshop will:
- Learn about the VEX Robotics programme, the competition structure in Ireland and Globally and how to get their school involved.
- Build a robot and understand how to code a robot to solve a problem.
As the world grows increasingly complex, the need for individuals equipped with the knowledge and skills to tackle tough problems by gathering information, evaluating it, and presenting effective solutions continues to increase. Still, relatively few students are proficient in the core subjects of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM). Increasingly, educators seek hands-on approaches to help engage young people and maintain their interest in STEM. ATU Donegal in partnership with local industry and the Donegal ETB have successfully rolled out the VEX Robotics programme to schools in Donegal over this past number of years with a view to promoting STEM in schools throughout the northwest.
They have successfully supplied robots and equipment and supported schools with teacher training in all aspects of VEX. ATU Donegal also host the regional finals of the VEX competition in January each year, with the winners of this competition going on to represent the North-West in the national finals in Cork.
The winners of these All-Ireland finals can go on to represent Ireland at the worlds in America later in the year. Competitive robotics encompasses all four pillars of STEM education, and encourages important life skills like teamwork, communication, and project-based organisation. Come along on Thursday the 14th of Novemberto find out more about this exciting new initiative.
