UFLI Foundations (Phonics)
Course Content - This workshop will provide a brief overview of the UFLI Foundations. UFLI is a systematic, explicit phonics programme, suitable for Junior Infants to 2nd Class. The programme contains 128 units, with easy-to-follow lesson plans. Lessons take approximately 30 minutes, each consisting of systematic review and explicit teaching and practice of new concepts. Free companion lessons resources are available online, including PowerPoint presentations, games & decodable texts. Sample lessons will be demonstrated.
Learning Outcomes - PLC, Reading Learning Outcomes 4 & 5.
Through appropriately playful and engaging learning experiences, children should be able to:
- Play with, recognise and manipulate sounds such as syllables, rhyme, onset-rime and phonemes in spoken words.
- Recognise, name and sound all lower- and upper-case letters and common letter patterns, displaying some word-identification strategies when reading instructional and independent-level texts.
- Use phonic knowledge and a range of word identification strategies with flexibility and confidence when reading instructional and independent-level texts.
Facilitator, Deirdre O’Toole is a Primary Teacher and is currently studying for her PhD in Literacy Education. She is passionate about early literacy, child-led play and making the classroom a fun place for the children to learn. Deirdre runs the Instagram page ‘Playful Classroom’. Deirdre has no affiliation with UFLI.
